Okay, okay, okay. We admit it. We’re a tad biased toward California-based female internet writers who have good taste.
Biases aside, though, we know today’s Inside the House won’t disappoint.
Brooke Giannetti, interior designer and creator of the Velvet & Linen blog, and her husband Steve Giannetti, a well-known Los Angeles architect, recently listed their Santa Monica home for $3,995,000. The home quickly went under contract, and once you peruse the photos it won’t be hard to see why.
A few take-aways. First, location, location, location applies even to bloggers and architects. The Giannettis’ house is sixteen blocks from the beach North of Montana in Santa Monica. This happens to be one of the hottest neighborhoods in Los Angeles as of late. Houses are going into bidding wars (’06, anyone?) and often open houses resemble a mosh pit at a Nirvana show in the 90’s.
Secondly, well, the house is pretty special. While frumpy traditional isn’t our thing, we think that this house is the right type of traditional. Built in 2002, the house reminds us of a Vineyard or Hamptons house. And Brooke’s style is right on. A few features we like: The great hardwood floors, the non-fussy garden, the non-symmetrical placement of furniture (it looks like chairs and accessories were just dropped in), the mismatched dining chairs, the globe collection, the window seat with bookcases, and the unusual placement of the bathtub overlooking the garden.
One more thing to note: This specific area (North of Montana, South of San Vicente) is known for small parcels of land. Yet bigger isn’t necessarily always better. The pool and garden are sufficient for almost any family. Sure, maybe your future tennis or baseball star won’t be able to practice at home, but that’s what parks and playdates are for.
