I admit I was having trouble writing a Valentine’s article.

Simone LeBlanc did such a wonderful piece on Valentine’s gift giving for us last week that I knew it would be impossible to top that topic. Therefore, I decided to avoid gifts all together, but I was coming up empty for another story idea. After a few days of having my editorial board empty, I decided to skip Valentine’s Day for us altogether, instead focusing on adding forty or so new Bungalux listings to the site over the weekend.

It was only Monday morning when I was combing through all our new listings on the site that I realized something. Most of the real estate I had picked (incidentally, I’m asked often how we pick what properties go on the site … it simply comes down to the ones we like the best) had an element of romance to them.

Why? I wondered. I’m not “girly girl” when it comes to my taste. I tend to prefer soft contemporary houses. My favorite outfits are the more tailored, male-influenced ones. My TV is always tuned to ESPN and CNBC and I’ve never seen Real Housewives … any of them.

So, why this change of spirit? How come the houses I pulled for the site were more traditional and softer … less “I want to seduce you by wearing head-to-toe black Tom Ford and heavy eyeliner” and more “I want to wear sweats and read you to sleep.” Despite the lack of a boyfriend, is it possible I was becoming romantic?

To help me find my answer, I Googled “romance.”

According to the dictionary, the first definition of “romance” is “a love affair.”

It mentioned nothing about a person. So, come to think of it, there had been plenty of love affairs in my life over the past year. What have I loved? Writing my second novel I just finished, Bungalux, music, my friends, sports, University Avenue in Palo Alto before dawn with the lights on the trees, my Chad Eisner navy blue scarf and Alice & Olivia black skirt … the list went on and on. So, by definition 1A I had plenty of romance in my life.

And then I moved on to definition #2 of romance: “Romance is a mysterious or fascinating quality or appeal, as of something adventurous, heroic, or strangely beautiful.” I’m fortunate that I have plenty of adventure, heroism, and strange beauty in my life. Every day of my life is different. Maybe some days are more exciting than others, but life is always changing for me.

I applied the same litmus test to the rest of romance’s definitions, and I realized that my life is incredibly romantic. After realizing the romance in my life, I gained a renewed enthusiasm for not only Valentine's Day, but today's article. With our without a real Valentine, we can celebrate the romance in life.

Which, perhaps, is why I was honing in on romantic rooms this weekend. I’ve pulled ten of my favorites – though there are infinitely more – to take a look at. Click over to today's top ten list and I promise you're in for a treat. And, Happy Valentine’s Day to all of our fans. May your day be full of adventure, heroes, strange beauty, and romance ... whatever your definition.
