Winter Wonderland: Ten Swoon-Worthy Chalets

Real Estate

When DOMAINE HOME asked me to swing on by and pick a few of my favorite ski places on the market ... well, let's just say it was my version of a winter fairytale. Though there's something fun about "beach," I admit with X Games, Sundance, and the Olympics in the near past and future the slopes are feeling much more appealing than ever.

So, if you're looking for a place to ski, snowboard, or just plain apres-ski (no coordination necessary for that .. well maybe a little ...), take a peek at ten great spots to do just that. So from Gstaad to Aspen, let the Snow Games begin.

  1. Historic Grandeur in Gstaad (price upon request)

    Location: Gstaad, Switzerland
    Price: upon request
    Listing Type: Single Family
    Beds/Baths: 19/6
    Year Built: 1920
Bragging Rights: The home stands in 15,000 square meters of forest, gardens and meadows.
Amazing Amenity: 19 bedrooms make this house the perfect large-group getaway.
Professional Opinion: There’s nothing quite like a Gstaad ski chalet to say you’ve made it. So, the elevation’s a little low and ski can be hit-or-miss, it’s Gstaad so we excuse all of it.

  2. Vail Village Architectural ($20,000,000)

    Location: Vail, Colorado
    Price: $20,000,000
    Listing Type: Single Family
    Beds/Baths: 5/5
    Year Built: 1963
Bragging Rights: Built by Vail’s original town architect, Fitzhugh Scott. Named one of America’s Most Architecturally Significant Homes by Barron’s Magazine.
Amazing Amenity: Ski-in/ski-out access at the base of Vail’s Gondola One ski lift.
Professional Opinion: I love this original charmer in Vail. And with Vail’s glorious back bowls at your fingertips I guarantee you you won’t be spending a lot of time at home anyways.

  3. Rose Spur Retreat ($7,500,000)

    Location: Snowmass, Colorado
    Price: $7,500,000
    Listing Type: Single Family

    Year Built: 1997
Bragging Rights: Picturesque horseback, hiking and cross country skiing trails right at your doorstep.
    Amazing Amenity: Separate artist studio.
Professional Opinion: I liked this one because it felt traditional and not trying too hard to be a ski lodge. For those of you who want to hit Aspen and have kids, Snowmass is probably the way to go.

  4. Modern Mountain Living ($3,100,000)

    Location: Truckee, California

Professional Opinion: I’m going to admit that Tahoe is one of the few ski resorts I haven’t been to - but I loved this house as soon as I read about it in the Wall Street Journal. Ski lodges need not look old to be cool.
