Alex's Style Pick: Lucite for All Budgets

The Coolest Plastic Around (Besides Your AmEx)

I'm obsessed with today's style pick because it's one of the most versatile I've chosen yet.

Perhaps a bit ahead of its time, Lucite (aka: Plexiglas) was an acrylic resin first exhibited at the 1939 World's Fair. Like all trends, the material came in and out of fashion throughout the years, but it's now chicer than ever. And the trend is here to stay. Past and present designers who extensively use acrylics range from Gilbert Rohde to Karl Springer to Bungalux Guest Editor Alexandra von Furstenberg.

Why am I covering it today? Well, it's the perfect Bungalux style pick. Lucite has the advantage of working in very small spaces because of its invisibility. So for those of you who complain - and some of you do - that we focus too much on big spaces and large houses on the site, here's a trend really tailored for apartments and tight rooms. In fact, you'll notice that a lot of our room photos illustrating this trend are compact rooms where heavy wood wouldn't work.

Secondly, though Lucite has an unfair reputation of being expensive, it can be found at any price. So while I'm lusting over Dering Hall's more expensive pieces, I think that the CB2 Nesting Tables and Philippe Starck Ghost Chairs are great ways to get this trend inexpensively. And, of course, I'm still adoring Alexandra's acrylic collection. She's introducing new pieces October 1st and I'm already on the waiting list.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to get the Lucite look at home (all are pictured above as well):

Of course I love anything ALEXANDRA VON FURSTENBERG. You can close your eyes and click on anything on her site and I promise you can't go wrong. I have her tray for and am lusting over her Zebra Charm Bowl (pictured above) which will be available on October 1st, along with additional new designs.

On the glamourous high-end Dering Hall has some of the best lucite pieces out there. A few of many of my picks: the DARA LUCITE OCTAGONAL DINING TABLE, DRAGONETTE’S SANTORINI CHAIR, BLUE AND WHITE INVISIBLE CHAIRS BY JULY ZHOU, and the SUMMER PALACE ALTAR TABLE BY JULY ZHOU. For Dering Hall's entire lucite collection, CLICK HERE.

For those more budget minded, PHILIPPE STARCK GHOST CHAIRS are one of the iconic ways to incorporate Lucite into a dining room or in the corner of a room. In addition, they're stackable, so they're perfect for a party. And CB2 NESTING TABLES are perfect accessories.

Finally, for those of you who want this trend but can't afford hundreds of dollars for it, accessorize with it! Bathroom accessories are available all over the internet from our favorite sites like Bed Bath and Beyond. I promise you can get the trend for under $50.
